Home ruler or giant, top ten in Argentina and Brazil, and a namesake list full of speed and football.
Enzo has a way of sounding fast even when it's standing still. Two quick syllables, a zesty z in the middle and that open, sunny ending: it's a name that seems to arrive with the windows down.
It comes from Italian, and the meaning is a choice between two very good options: home ruler or giant. Anyone who has lived with a toddler will know these are, in practice, exactly the same thing.
Enzo is a real favourite in Argentina, where it ranked number 6 in 2024, and in Brazil, where it reached number 8 in 2022. Catalonia is close behind at number 11.
It's popular further afield too, if a little less ubiquitous. New Zealand has Enzo at 70, France at 79 and England & Wales at 92, all in 2024. Canada ranks it 112, and the United States put it at 174 in 2020. So it's familiar enough that nobody will look baffled, but it still carries a bit of continental glamour in an English-speaking playground.
If namesakes matter to you, Enzo comes with a distinctly sporty crowd. Enzo Ferrari was an Italian racing driver and entrepreneur. The rest of the list is pure football:
That's very nearly a five-a-side team, provided somebody agrees to go in goal. It does rather suggest a baby Enzo might come with an unusually strong kick, so perhaps keep the good vases on a high shelf.
What's striking is how naturally the name moves across borders. Italian, Argentine, Uruguayan: Enzo sounds right in all of them, and it sounds right in an English-speaking home, too.
Enzo sits beautifully beside other names with a sunny warmth. Leo, Lucas and Matteo all make lovely brothers, while Giulia is a gorgeous choice for a sister. Say Enzo and Giulia out loud and tell us it doesn't sound like a little café you'd want to have lunch in.
The name has no obvious nickname, and frankly doesn't need one. It is already short, punchy and affectionate. You'd struggle to make it any snappier without just saying Enz, and nobody wants that.
Of course, picking a name for a person you haven't met yet is a wonderfully absurd task. You're weighing up meanings, rankings and namesakes while also wondering whether the name sounds right when called crossly across a park. But if a small giant with a big, warm heart has been circling your list, Enzo might just be the one to take the chequered flag.
