Ethan

There is a particular kind of name that sounds like it will show up on time, and Ethan is the founding member.

It comes to us via French, and the meaning is a short list rather than a single word: strong, safe, or firm. No poetry, no flowers, no mythological baggage. Just three adjectives you would want in a foundation, a friendship or a rope bridge. For anyone who has spent a night holding a very small person and thinking mostly about safety, that is a rather appealing thing to write on a birth certificate.

A genuinely global top fifty

Ethan is not a regional favourite that has crept abroad. It is properly, evenly popular. It sits thirteenth in the United States as of 2020 and fifteenth in Canada in 2024. The name has been worn by Ethan Hawke, the American actor and writer born in 1970, by Ethan Suplee, an American actor, and by Ethan Ampadu, a Welsh footballer. Fiction is fond of it too: Ethan Hunt has been sprinting across cinema screens for years, and Ethan Winters has had a famously terrible time of things in Resident Evil. Between them they cover stage, pitch and considerable peril, which for a name meaning safe is quite the irony.

On a shortlist Ethan sits comfortably next to Nathan, Lucas, Emma and Chloé. Modern, softly European, no fuss. If those are the names you keep circling back to, this one will not feel like a departure.

The only caution is popularity. A top fifty name means the occasional duplicate at nursery, and you should make peace with that in advance rather than at the first birthday party.

Then again, every name on your list has some flaw you will magnify at two in the morning. That is the deal. Enjoy the deliberating, because it never feels this important again.
