Mila

Say it out loud: Mila. It's over almost before you've started, and it leaves a pleasant little hum behind. No wonder so many parents are saying it on repeat. It's the sort of name that works just as well whispered at bedtime as it does bellowed from the back door when tea is on the table.

Mila is a Slavic name, and its meaning is about as warm as meanings get: gracious, dear, or beloved. You could hardly pick a kinder thing to call someone every day for the rest of their life, including the days they've drawn on the wallpaper in felt tip.

From Slavic roots to the other side of the world

For a name with such deep roots, Mila has been remarkably quick on its feet. It's #10 in New Zealand (2024) and #11 in Canada, and it reached #20 in the United States in 2020. Further down the charts, but still very much in the conversation:

The people who have carried the name make a lovely little gallery. Mila Gojsalić is a Croatian folk heroine, which gives the name a properly storybook glow. Mila Pavićević, a Croatian writer, lends it a literary streak. Mila del Sol, the Filipino actress, shows just how far from its Slavic home the name has wandered, and Mila Sivatskaya, the Ukrainian actor, brings it right up to date.

Style-wise, Mila keeps company with names like Leo, Maya, Luca and Elena: short, vowel-rich and equally happy in half a dozen languages. It doesn't really need a nickname, though you'll almost certainly end up inventing a ridiculous one anyway. That's simply the law of family life.

The only genuine hazard is how close it sits to other soft names on the same shortlist. Say Mila and Maya a few times in a row and you may find you've forgotten which one you actually liked. Write them both down, sleep on it, and see which one you're still humming in the morning.

Which is the delicious agony of it all. You're choosing a word someone will answer to for the best part of a century, and you'll second-guess it at least a hundred times before the birth certificate is signed. But if you're after something gracious, dear and well travelled, Mila is a very good place for all that second-guessing to finally stop.
